This continues the "In a Nutshell" series. Since writing #1 and #2, I have mulled over the difference between my chronological story and my story of hope - I was getting a little confused! Thankfully, God chose to enlighten and bless me with some clarification.
Thanks to some timely preaching, I realize that there are two kinds of summaries Christians should be prepared to share. The first one describes the facts of the Gospel of Jesus Christ: about creation, sin, the need for Jesus, his death on the cross and resurrection, and the benefits for those who accept this good news and commit to Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. This is an historical and chronological account similar to Stephen’s speech in form and function. The second kind of summary describes the personal experience of living with Jesus in one’s heart and the profound difference it has made in a believer’s life. With both summaries, a believer can not only tell the good news about Jesus Christ, but also allow one’s own personal story of transformation to encourage the listener to seriously consider becoming a Christian. It is the second summary (3 minutes long) that I wish to present today. Imagine I am speaking excitedly!
(Start)
Friend – I’m glad you asked what it means to me to be a Christian; to have Jesus as my Lord and Saviour:
First of all, it means I am connected to God. His Spirit moved into my body and my life once I accepted Jesus. The Spirit is the bridge between my heart and God's, so now, I am connected to God forever! Before becoming a Christian, my sins separated me from God. But, since Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins, my slate is wiped clean and I am OK'd to be in His presence.
I have hope for an eternal future in heaven with Jesus after I die. God’s word says that anyone who believes that Jesus is the Son of God will go to heaven. Have you heard about heaven? There will be no more crying, no more sorrow, and no more pain; just joy being in the presence of God Himself. The beauty of the Light of Jesus will shine on us and sparkle way more than all the jewels on earth put together. Can you begin to imagine it??
Now that God’s Spirit lives in me, He gives me the ability to accomplish His plans. I now rely on Him to give me strength, wisdom, and skill to complete the good works He wants me to do. For sure, I still get nervous and sometimes have doubts about my ability to perform certain tasks, but once I remember that God’s Spirit is empowering me, I breathe deeply and take the first step - totally focused on the task, not my doubts. These abilities and others are His gifts to believers. And, guess what? They are available to you too, if you accept Jesus into your life.
And, peace: the more I pray, the less I worry. It’s like a switch, as soon as I notice that I am worrying, I turn my focus to God, then relax, knowing that His power and control is over every situation. I trust God to do His best – this gives me assurance and peace. It has certainly taken me awhile to “let go and let God”, but the more I get the hang of it, the more peace I experience.
Jesus gives me a life with purpose and passion! The Bible says that God planned all the days of my life before I was born. No matter what happens to me, good or bad, He has a special purpose just for me in each situation. Every day I trust Him for a good outcome. He leads me to meet and influence certain people in ways that only I can. He gives me projects that will benefit others. Through the daily process of listening to God, I am learning to trust Him more, especially when I would choose another direction. Each morning, I wake up excited about the opportunity to participate in God’s world, in His way!
Finally, love: God loves me unconditionally. Now that makes my heart melt! He chose me before my birth to be His child. He forgives my sins. He is patient with me. He lavishes me with His grace and mercy. He protects me from evil forces. I am his beloved daughter for whom He would do anything. Oh, wait! He already did – He sent His son Jesus to save me from eternal death. Oh, I am so thankful! God loves you too and wants to call you His child. What do you say?
(Finished)
Well, dear reader – thanks for “listening”! It is a little over 3 minutes, but, in a nutshell, it summarizes my hope and joy in believing in Jesus Christ. May you also be blessed by God’s presence!
