They are sitting there on my kitchen counter where I am easily reminded to take them - my numerous health supplements, that is. Frequently, I ignore them, then wonder why I have health issues. Today, I saw them again, but stopped in my tracks just out of arm’s reach . . . the voices in my head spoke with raised pitch:Me: What is the matter with me? Why don’t I just take these health supplements as prescribed? I am such a rebel! Why does good health require following so many daily habits?
Good Voice: You know you want good health. The supplements are good for you. Go ahead.
Bad Voice: Surely you can do without them. Surely, God will heal you without you having to go to the effort to take them every day.
Good Voice: It’s a simple thing just to take them. Just imagine how healthy your body will be with the proper nutrients inside it.
Me: Right! I’ve been saying to myself and my kids, “Take care of your body now, so that in 20 years it will be healthy.” I certainly don’t want to be a hypocrite, OR a bad example.
Bad Voice: But, really, you’re not that sick now, are you?
Me: Well, it’s not like I’m bed-ridden . . .
Good Voice: But you might be in 20 years if you don’t take care of these things now. Be good to yourself - just take the supplements!
Me: Hmm, do I want to be good to myself? I’d have to give up some attitudes such as self-pity, stubbornness, and using my aches and pains as excuses to avoid certain activities. These changes may make me more available to serve God – I am scared of the unknown!
Bad Voice: Right, you don’t like change, even your family has made that observation about you. And, who really knows if you’re going to live for another 20 years anyway!
Good Voice: Beloved, this is what God says to you:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me in earnest, you will find me when you seek me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes.” Jeremiah 29: 11-13 NLT
Good Voice: Since God loves you so much and has so many wonderful plans for you, he wants you to be healthy enough to enjoy them. He’s even provided us with knowledge on how to keep our bodies as healthy as possible. God knows your body and wants you take these supplements, AND, I might add, go for your walks.
Me: Lord, help me; help me to love myself as much as you do! Spirit – block these Bad Voices, send them away, in the name of Jesus Christ. Lord, release me from the captivity of negative thoughts, poor self-image and rebellion. Help me to focus only on your Voice. May I happily accept the necessities of these daily health regimens! May I look with hope to the blessings you have prepared for me. Thank you, Lord!
